Israel and Hamas Agree on First Phase of Peace Deal
On October 9, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas agreed to the first phase of a US-brokered Gaza peace deal. US President Donald Trump officially announced the agreement on his social media platform, Truth Social.
President Trump stated, “All Israeli hostages will soon be released, and Israel will pull back its military to a designated line. This is the first step toward a strong and lasting peace.” In an interview with Fox News, Trump mentioned that the hostages held in Gaza are expected to be freed by Monday.
This agreement follows indirect negotiations held in Egypt on October 8. The deal includes the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and the exchange of prisoners between both sides. According to media reports, nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners will be released in exchange for all surviving Israeli hostages within 72 hours of the agreement’s implementation. The exchange may also include the return of the bodies of deceased hostages.
In a significant diplomatic gesture, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to both President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu over the phone. He congratulated them on the success of the Gaza ceasefire plan. Netanyahu interrupted a cabinet meeting to take PM Modi's call. Modi praised the agreement, calling it effective in releasing hostages and providing humanitarian aid, reaffirming India's support for such peace efforts.
PM Modi and President Trump also discussed ongoing trade talks between India and the United States. Meanwhile, Trump is expected to visit Egypt later this week to further support the peace efforts.
