Iran Suspends Visa-Free Facility for Indian Citizens
Iran has immediately suspended the visa-free entry facility for Indian passport holders from 22 November. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, several Indians were being lured to Iran under the pretext of fake jobs and promises of onward travel, where some were abducted and held for ransom.
New Visa Requirement
Due to the increasing incidents, all Indian citizens traveling to Iran for tourism or transit will now require a visa. The visa-free travel privilege for ordinary Indian passport holders has been revoked. Indian travelers must now obtain a visa before visiting Iran.
Reason for Suspension
This step was taken after reports of Indians being misled with false job offers or promises of onward travel to other countries. Some travelers were abducted for ransom upon arrival in Iran. The Iranian government aims to prevent misuse of the visa-free facility by criminal elements.
Travel Advisory
The Ministry of External Affairs has advised all Indian citizens intending to travel to Iran to remain vigilant. They should avoid agents offering visa-free travel to third countries via Iran or promising onward travel.
