Indore Becomes India's First Wetland Accredited City

Marking a significant step in environmental protection and sustainable development, Indore, Madhya Pradesh has made history by becoming the first city in India to be included in the list of Wetland Accredited Cities by the Ramsar Convention.

This recognition was officially granted in January 2025 and will remain valid for six years, with the possibility of renewal. A special event was held at the Ministry of Environment, New Delhi on September 9, where this honor was awarded to Indore Municipal Corporation.

Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav, Additional Commissioner Rohit Sisonia, and council members Ashwini Shukla and Abhishek Bablu Sharma were present in Delhi to receive the honor.

About Sirpur Lake

  • Sirpur Lake is an artificial lake, nearly 100 years old, and was declared a Ramsar Site in 2022.
  • It is home to over 180 bird species, including migratory birds from Siberia, Europe, and Asia.

Conservation Efforts

  • Revival of the lake led by Indore Municipal Corporation in partnership with local NGOs.
  • Over 200 “Wetland Friends” actively involved in conservation and public awareness.

Public Engagement & Eco-Tourism

  • Regular clean-up drives and bird-watching programs.
  • Promotion of environmental education and eco-tourism in the region.
