Indigenous LCA Mark-1A to Take Flight Today

The indigenous fighter aircraft Tejas Mark-1A took its maiden flight today at Nasik. This is a major milestone in India’s defense self-reliance and the 'Make in India' campaign. Manufactured by HAL, this advanced aircraft will enhance the strength of the Indian Air Force and address the shortage caused by retiring MiG-21s.

For India, October 17, 2025, is a historic day. It marks a significant step toward defense self-reliance and domestic manufacturing capabilities. The Tejas Mark-1A (LCA Mk-1A), built in India at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) plant in Nasik, took its first flight today.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh was present at the event. He also inaugurated the third production line for the Tejas Mark-1A and the second production line for the Hindustan Turbo Trainer (HTT-40) in Nasik. These steps will strengthen India’s defense manufacturing infrastructure and accelerate the Make in India initiative.

Speaking at the inauguration, Rajnath Singh said, "This land of Nasik is not only a symbol of faith but also a symbol of self-reliant India and capability. The HAL campus here stands as a proud symbol of the nation's defense strength."

HAL’s Delivery Target for Tejas Mark-1A

The formal induction date of Tejas Mark-1A into the Air Force has not been announced yet, but HAL plans to deliver 83 Tejas Mark-1A aircraft within the next four years. However, the program has been delayed by about 1.5 to 2 years due to delays in the supply of American engines. Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh had previously expressed dissatisfaction over this delay.

Tejas to Boost the Air Force Squadron Strength

Recently, two MiG-21 squadrons were retired, leaving the Indian Air Force with only 29 squadrons. Tejas Mark-1A will play a key role in filling this gap and enhancing the combat capability of the Air Force amid evolving security challenges.

Features of Tejas Mark-1A

  • Fully indigenous and advanced design fighter aircraft.
  • Advanced version of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA).
  • Fourth-generation multirole fighter jet—light, fast, and precise.
  • Capable of operating in all weather, day and night, and in all missions.
  • Can carry more than 5.5 tons of weapons and engage multiple targets simultaneously.
  • Equipped with AESA radar, Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile system, electronic warfare suite, and air-to-air refueling capability.

Indigenous Technology, Free from Foreign Dependence

About 65% of Tejas Mark-1A is made in India. This means India does not need foreign approval for any upgrades or modifications. This project strongly promotes the spirit of Make in India and self-reliant India. The aircraft's production has given a new direction to India’s defense and aerospace industry. It is not just an aircraft but a symbol of India’s technological capability and engineering skill.

Tejas: India’s New Flight, Symbol of Self-Reliance

The maiden flight of Tejas Mark-1A is not only a scientific and industrial achievement for India but also a historic milestone in strategic self-reliance for the country.
