India has strongly protested China's decision to create two new counties in the Hotan region, saying that it will never accept illegal occupation. On January 3, India lodged a formal protest with China regarding the creation of these new counties, which it claims lie partially in the Indian Union Territory of Ladakh.
India's response has been firm, stating that the creation of new counties will not affect India's long-standing and consistent position on its sovereignty over the region, nor will it legitimize China's illegal and forcible occupation.
Additionally, India has expressed concerns over China's decision to build dams on the Brahmaputra River. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated on Friday that New Delhi has raised its concerns with Beijing regarding China's plan to construct a hydropower project on the Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet.
It is noteworthy that this river also flows into India. Chinese officials, however, claim that the hydropower projects in Tibet will not have a significant impact on the environment or downstream water supply. Despite this, India and Bangladesh have expressed their concerns. The Yarlung Zangbo River flows through Arunachal Pradesh and Assam in India before merging with the Brahmaputra River and eventually reaching Bangladesh.
India's Ministry of External Affairs has stated that it will continue to monitor the situation to protect its interests and take necessary steps. The Ministry has also urged China to ensure that the interests of the downstream states of the Brahmaputra are not harmed by these projects.
China recently announced plans to build a massive dam on the Brahmaputra. The project will be located in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo in Tibet, where the river takes a sharp U-turn as it enters Arunachal Pradesh. The construction is expected to cost $137 billion.
If this dam is completed according to China's plans, it will surpass the Three Gorges Dam in China, currently the largest in the world, making it the largest dam in the world once completed.
