India's Only Active Volcano Erupts
Barren Island, located about 138 kilometers from Port Blair, is South Asia's only active volcano. In the last eight days, two mild volcanic eruptions have occurred on Barren Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The volcano erupted on September 13 and 20, 2023, with both explosions being mild and posing no threat to the surrounding areas.
Barren Island is an uninhabited island of approximately 3 square kilometers covered with volcanic ash and rocks. The island stands 354 meters tall and is a distinct landmark of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
According to records, the first eruption was in 1787, and the volcano has erupted multiple times since then, including significant eruptions in 2017 and 2022. Activity was also recorded in July 2023.
