On November 18, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah launched a personal computer named ‘KEO’, priced at ₹18,999. This compact, affordable AI-enabled computer has been fully designed and developed within the state to bridge the digital divide.
Officials stated that KEO stands for Knowledge-driven (K), Economical (E), and Open-source (O). Its objective is to provide AI-enabled computing access at the grassroots level, empowering citizens across Karnataka.
Developed by KEOnix with support from the Electronics, IT, and BT Department, the official launch was made by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at the Bengaluru Tech Summit (BTS) 2025.
Karnataka IT Minister Priyank Kharge said in a press conference: “India’s most affordable AI-enabled personal computer is officially launched. It is the most compact and powerful AI device in India, fully open-source based, and you cannot make such a device anywhere in the world for ₹18,999.”
He added that the initial project was low-cost, and geopolitical issues related to rare minerals had increased memory costs, but the situation is now stabilizing, making the device affordable.
Kharge noted that Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan and Biocon chief Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw were impressed by the device and have ordered it for schools.
The computer is designed to ensure that every student, engineer, maker, innovator, and household has access to powerful, intelligent computing both at advanced and grassroots levels. Currently, less than 10% of Indian households own a computer, and in Karnataka, only 15% do.
While smartphones are widespread, studies show computers are essential for academic work, coding, online classes, and hybrid education. Over 60% of Indian students reported that a lack of computers prevents them from participating in online training.
KEO operates on an open-source RISC-V processor with a Linux-based OS. It includes 4G, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, and audio support. Pre-installed software supports learning and programming, and an on-device AI core enables AI applications to run locally without the internet.
The device also includes “BEEUDDH”, an AI agent trained on the Karnataka Department of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT) curriculum, assisting students even in low-internet regions.
KEO is available for pre-order on the official KEOnix website, with manufacturing expansion planned in Mysuru and other locations.
