India Wins Four Gold Medals at U17 World Wrestling Championship 2025

The U17 World Wrestling Championship 2025 was held from July 28 to August 3 at the Ano Liosia Olympic Hall in Athens, Greece. Indian wrestlers delivered an impressive performance, winning a total of nine medals: four gold, four silver, and one bronze.

Hardeep won India’s first medal of the tournament by clinching gold in the 110 kg Greco-Roman category. In women’s freestyle wrestling, Rachna (43 kg) and Ashwini Vishnoi (65 kg) also secured gold medals. Ashwini dominated the field with an outstanding performance, not conceding a single point in the final.

This championship was held at the same venue where wrestling events were conducted during the Athens 2004 Olympics. The tournament featured all three wrestling disciplines—men's freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women's freestyle—with ten weight categories in each.

Last year, in the 2024 edition held in Amman, Jordan, India had won ten medals—five gold, one silver, and four bronze. Notably, eight of those were won by women wrestlers, and two by Greco-Roman wrestlers.

This year, India successfully defended its title in the women’s freestyle category, defeating powerhouses like the USA and Japan. Former U17 World Champion Kajal moved up from the 69 kg to the 73 kg category and earned a silver medal.

The tournament began on July 28 with Greco-Roman style, followed by women's wrestling on July 30, and men's freestyle starting August 1. Each weight category started with qualification rounds, followed by semifinals on the same day, and repechage and medal matches on the next.
