India-US Trade Deal: Pulses Removed, $500 Billion Purchase Not Mandatory

In the trade deal agreement between India and the United States, there is no mention of importing pulses from the US. This clarification comes from the revised fact sheets released by the White House on the evening of February 10. Previously, the fact sheet mentioned pulses, but the new version omits them entirely. Similarly, the earlier claim that India is committed to purchasing $500 billion worth of US products over the next five years has been revised. Now it states that India intends to purchase, indicating no binding obligation.

Opposition Raised Concerns

Previously, the opposition criticized the government over the earlier fact sheet. However, the situation has changed completely. The Trump administration's softened language in the revised fact sheet shows that Washington is approaching this agreement cautiously, especially regarding politically sensitive issues.

Changes in Sensitive Agricultural Products

The earlier fact sheet mentioned 'some pulses,' which have now been completely removed in the revised version. The day before, the Indian government had stated that imports of sensitive agricultural products would not be opened, protecting Indian farmers and domestic markets. Pulses are considered sensitive agricultural commodities in India, and any tariff changes could have impacted the domestic market.

$500 Billion US Product Purchases

The revised fact sheet emphasizes India's willingness rather than obligation to purchase US products such as energy, information technology, and coal. This change reflects a flexible approach from the Trump administration.

Digital Services Tax and Bilateral Negotiations

Earlier, it was claimed that India would remove its digital services tax. The revised fact sheet removes this claim, stating instead that both countries will engage in strong bilateral discussions on digital trade rules, focusing on eliminating discriminatory practices and barriers.

Alignment with Modi-Trump Talks

These revisions align more closely with the original joint statement following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump four days earlier. The Indian government had expressed discomfort with the initial fact sheets.
