India to Manufacture Tejas Fighter Jet Engines under Mission Aero

31 October: India is taking a major step towards producing its own fighter jet engines. The Indian defense industry has urged the government to launch Mission Aero Engine, aimed at developing a fully indigenous 110 kN high-thrust engine. This mission could free India from foreign dependence and advance the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat in defense.

Reducing Dependence on Foreign Engines

Currently, India is in talks with foreign companies like France's Safran for engine development. However, the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) has urged the government to build domestic capabilities, ensuring that international restrictions or sanctions do not affect the Air Force or civil aviation.

The report highlights that sanctions from any country, including the US, UK, France, or Russia, could impact India's aviation sector. Indigenous engine manufacturing has thus become a national security necessity.

Objectives of Mission Aero Engine

The mission aims to design and manufacture a 110 kN capacity engine in India, for next-generation fighter jets such as AMCA and civilian aircraft. Indian companies will lead the design and manufacturing, with government support via tax incentives and low-interest loans. The Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) will provide technical guidance and testing facilities. Prototype engines are expected within five years, followed by testing and large-scale production.

India's Engine Requirements

Over the next 20 years, India will need at least 712 such engines to power Tejas Mk-1, Mk-1A, Mk-2, and upcoming AMCA fighter jets. This will create a defense market worth approximately ₹7.6 lakh crore and generate thousands of jobs for engineers and technical experts.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh's Statement

"Self-reliance is not just a slogan; it is the foundation of India's security. Initiatives like Mission Aero Engine will ensure that our skies remain under Indian control," said Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.
