The Indian government is set to collect 19 types of personal information from international travelers starting from April 1st, including details about the seat on which passengers traveled, the number of bags they carried, and how the trip was financed. The data will be stored for up to five years and can be shared with law enforcement agencies if required. This move aims to enhance surveillance and track suspicious travel patterns, particularly in cases of smuggling. Airlines have been instructed to share this data with the Customs Department, and a pilot project will begin on February 10, with full implementation starting from April 1.

Starting from 10th February, the government will run a pilot project with select airlines, and after the data-sharing system is fully functional, all airlines operating international flights will be required to comply. This regulation was initially proposed in 2022 but is now being made mandatory to improve security and address potential illegal activities.
Impact and Future Plans
This initiative will not only improve security measures but also enhance the government’s ability to track and identify suspicious activities involving international travelers. The data will be analyzed by the Customs Department regularly to detect any unusual travel patterns. If any such patterns are identified, investigations will be initiated immediately.
