India and Sri Lanka Strengthen Energy and Defense Cooperation

India and Sri Lanka to Connect through Petroleum Pipeline and Power Grid

On December 16, India and Sri Lanka made significant decisions to enhance their partnership, adopting a forward-looking approach. They resolved to finalize a defense cooperation agreement soon and strengthen energy ties by establishing electricity grid connectivity and a multi-product petroleum pipeline. These decisions were made during comprehensive talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumar Dissanayake. Prime Minister Modi stated that both parties emphasized investment-based development and connectivity facilitation for economic partnership. He said, "We have decided that physical, digital, and energy connectivity will be key pillars of our cooperation." Modi further stated that work will be done to establish electricity grid connectivity and a multi-product petroleum pipeline between the two countries, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be supplied to Sri Lanka's power plants. He also announced that a ferry service will be started between Rameswaram and Talaimannar to improve connectivity between the two nations. Modi added, "We both agree that our security interests are intertwined. We have decided to finalize the defense cooperation agreement soon. An agreement on hydrography (hydrology) cooperation has also been made."

The talks also addressed the contentious issue of fishermen. Modi stated, "We discussed issues related to the livelihood of fishermen. We agree that a humanitarian approach should be adopted in this matter." Referring to the Tamil issue, he mentioned that India hopes the Sri Lankan government will meet the aspirations of the Tamil community. Modi also mentioned that India has provided Sri Lanka with a $5 billion loan facility and aid so far.

The Prime Minister concluded by saying, "We are cooperating with all 25 districts of Sri Lanka, and the selection of our projects is always based on the priorities of our partner countries."
