Hyundai Appoints Tarun Garg as First Indian CEO in 29 Years

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has appointed Tarun Garg as its next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, marking the first time in its 29-year history that an Indian has been chosen to lead the company. Garg will officially take over on January 1, 2026.

He will succeed Unsoo Kim, who is returning to Hyundai Motor Company’s headquarters in South Korea for a strategic role. Tarun Garg currently serves as Chief Operating Officer (COO) and full-time Director at HMIL. He brings over 32 years of experience in the automotive industry.

Vast Experience Across Key Business Functions

According to Hyundai’s official statement, Garg has extensive experience in sales, marketing, distribution, financial management, product strategy, and brand communication. Over the past two years, he has worked closely with the global management team, positioning him well for the top leadership role.

Leadership Backed by Record Success

José Muñoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, praised the appointment and stated, “Tarun becomes the first Indian to lead HMIL in its nearly three-decade history. Under his leadership as COO, the company recorded historic sales, profits, and launched India’s largest IPO.”

Outgoing MD & CEO Unsoo Kim commented, “Having worked closely with Tarun over the years, I am confident in his abilities. He has played a significant role in driving Hyundai India’s growth.”

Hyundai Share Performance

Following the leadership news, Hyundai’s stock1.15% at ₹2439.20. The stock’s 52-week high is ₹2,889.65 and the low is ₹1,542.95.
