While Madhya Pradesh has the largest forest area (85,725 sq km) in India, the condition of greenery in small towns is rapidly deteriorating. According to the latest report by the Forest Survey of India (FSI), 26 small towns in the state now have zero forest and tree cover, while 12 towns have less than 1% greenery.
The Forest Survey of India has conducted a mapping of forest and tree cover based on the urban local bodies' boundaries, in addition to districts and forest divisions. Since the survey was based on satellite imagery data, it provides precise information about those towns whose digital boundaries have been fixed in the records. The survey covered 132 small towns in Madhya Pradesh, analyzing the forest and tree cover situation as of 2023.
