The rural poverty ratio has decreased significantly due to the government's assistance programs and consumption growth. Not only the income disparity between rural and urban areas but also within villages has reduced. Poverty in villages has decreased. Due to the effects of government assistance programs, rural poverty in FY 2023-24 has reduced to 4.86%, down from 25.7% in 2011-12, as stated in a report released by SBI Research on Friday. The report also mentions that urban poverty is expected to decrease to 4.09% in the fiscal year ending in March 2024, compared to 13.7% in FY 2011-12. The estimated poverty line for FY 2023-24 is 1,632 rupees for rural areas and 1,944 rupees for urban areas.
Reasons for Reduced Poverty in Villages
SBI Research, in its report on the consumption expenditure survey, stated that the sharp decrease in rural poverty is the result of important government assistance coupled with consumption growth. The report mentions, "This support is critical because we find that changes in food prices have a significant impact not only on food expenditure but also on overall spending." According to the recently released domestic consumption expenditure survey by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the consumption inequality between rural and urban areas has decreased compared to the previous year during the period August 2023-July 2024.
Extreme Poverty Nearly Eliminated
According to SBI Research, the consumption expenditure survey shows that in FY 2023-24, rural poverty has significantly reduced to 4.86% (from 7.2% in FY 2022-23 and 25.7% in FY 2011-12). Meanwhile, urban poverty is expected to be 4.09% (compared to 4.6% in FY 2022-23 and 13.7% in 2011-12). However, the research report suggests that these numbers may be slightly revised after the completion of the 2021 Census and the release of updated rural-urban population data. The report states, "We believe that urban poverty may further decrease. The poverty rate in India is now likely to remain between 4.0-4.5%, while extreme poverty will be almost nonexistent."
