Visakhapatnam to Host 1 GW Capacity Facility, Backed by Renewable Energy
Google is set to build Asia’s largest data center in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, with an estimated investment of ₹50,000 crore. The facility will have a power capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW), while the total operational data center capacity in India currently stands at 1.4 GW.
According to Reuters, ₹16,000 crore out of the total investment will be dedicated to renewable energy infrastructure that will supply electricity to the data center.
In April, Google’s parent company Alphabet announced it would spend ₹6.25 lakh crore globally this year to expand its data center capacity.
Andhra Pradesh’s IT Minister Nara Lokesh confirmed that three submarine cable landing stations will also be built in Visakhapatnam, enabling high-speed data transfer.
So far, the state has finalized investments for data centers with a combined capacity of 1.6 GW. Over the next five years, Andhra Pradesh aims to reach 6 GW of data center capacity.
