Gita Gopinath to Leave IMF and Return to Harvard University
Indian-American economist Gita Gopinath has decided to step down from her role at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and return to Harvard University as a professor of economics. She will assume her new role as the Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics starting September 1.
Seven Years at the IMF
Gopinath, who has served as the Chief Economist and later as the First Deputy Managing Director at the IMF, announced her resignation recently. She played a key role in steering global economic policy during times of crisis, including the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions.
Return to Academia
In her statement, Gita Gopinath expressed enthusiasm about returning to academic life. “I’m honored to rejoin Harvard’s faculty and continue my work in global economic research and teaching,” she said. Gopinath had been on leave from Harvard since joining the IMF in 2018.
