Election Commission Announces Nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR)
The Election Commission of India is set to begin the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists across the country. The first phase will start on October 27 in five states and continue until March 2026. The process in states with local elections will be conducted later. Bihar has already completed this process.
According to sources, the first phase of SIR may begin on October 28. On October 27, the Election Commission has called an important meeting regarding this. The first phase will include Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal, where assembly elections are scheduled next year. Subsequently, states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh will also undergo the revision process.
Completion Timeline
Senior officials associated with the Commission stated that the first phase will be completed by March 2026. The second phase will then include hilly and remaining states. The Commission recently signaled accelerating this process during a meeting with all Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs).
States currently conducting or about to hold local body elections will not start the SIR immediately to avoid affecting election preparations. The revision in these states will occur in the second and final phase.
Bihar Completes the Process
Bihar has already completed the SIR process. The final voter list of 74.2 million voters was published on September 30. Voting in the state will be held in two phases on November 6 and 11, with results to be announced on November 14.
