Donald Trump Threatens Tariffs on Indian Rice
US President Donald Trump indicated on Monday that he might impose new tariffs on Indian rice and fertilizers from Canada. While announcing a new $12 billion aid package for American farmers at the White House, Trump stated that foreign imports were troubling American farmers, and it was time to take strict action.
Trump mentioned that some countries, including India, are "dumping" rice into the US, meaning they are selling it at very cheap prices, which is hurting American rice producers. He warned, "They cannot do that. We will not allow it." American farmers have long complained that cheap rice from India, Vietnam, and Thailand is ruining their market. Rice prices are falling, and local farmers are struggling. Trump said, "I have also heard from others that dumping is happening. We will take care of it."
Earlier this year, Trump had already imposed up to a 50% tariff on several goods imported from India. The reason cited was that India imposes heavy tariffs on American goods and purchases oil from Russia. Now, there is a strong possibility that new tariffs will be imposed on rice. Trump also threatened strict action on fertilizers from Canada. He said, "A lot of fertilizers used in the US come from Canada. If necessary, we will also impose heavy tariffs on that. This will increase fertilizer production within the US."
