On the occasion of Diwali on October 31, sweets will be exchanged between the soldiers of both the countries, after which patrolling will begin on the LAC in Depsang and Demchok after about four and a half years. In accordance with the agreement reached a few days ago between India and China to end the confrontation in Depsang and Demchok, both the countries have withdrawn their troops from the points of conflict in both these places. The withdrawal of troops from both the forward fronts of military confrontation in Depsang and Demchok in eastern Ladakh on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China has been completed. Temporary structures, tents and equipment etc. have also been completely removed from both these places. Talks were also held on Wednesday on the verification process related to the withdrawal of troops at the level of local military commanders of India and China. Now on October 31, on the occasion of Diwali, sweets will be exchanged between the soldiers of both the countries, after which patrolling will start on the LAC in Depsang and Demchok after about four and a half years. In accordance with the agreement reached a few days ago between India and China to end the confrontation in Depsang and Demchok, both the countries have withdrawn their troops from the points of conflict in both these places.
Army sources confirmed that steps have been taken in accordance with the agreement by both sides in Depsang and Demchok and said that the withdrawal of troops has been completed and patrolling will start here soon. According to the source, after the withdrawal of the troops, the verification work is now going on at the ground level. Now the methods of patrolling have to be decided between the military commanders deployed on the front of both the countries and talks will continue between them regarding this.
The source said that the withdrawal of troops from both the fronts was completed on October 29 itself, but the verification work was not completed by both the sides. Amid talks at the level of ground commanders, the Indian Army on Wednesday completed its verification of the withdrawal of Chinese troops at both Depsang and Demchok through UAVs. In view of this, it is expected that the army will start patrolling here from October 31. Under the agreement between India and China, the soldiers of both the countries will patrol at different time intervals and inform each other about it.
According to the source, Indian soldiers will go for patrolling at five places in Depsang and two places in Demchok. There is an agreement between the two sides to ensure compliance with the status quo before April 2020. When asked about the exchange of sweets between the two sides on Diwali, the source said that this is a big victory from both military and diplomatic point of view. However, it could not be immediately known at which places the sweets will be exchanged. Traditionally, soldiers of India and China have exchanged sweets and greetings on festivals in the past at various border posts located on the LAC, including in eastern Ladakh.
The US has said that it is closely monitoring the developments related to the India-China LAC agreement. Speaking to the media, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said, 'We understand that both the countries have taken initial steps to withdraw troops from the points of conflict on the LAC. We welcome any reduction in tension on the border.' When asked whether the US has any role in this matter, Miller said, 'No, we have talked to our Indian partners and we have been informed about it, but we have not played any role in this solution.
