Cyber Security App "Sanchar Saathi" to be Preloaded in Smartphones
The Government of India has directed all smartphone companies to preload the 'Sanchar Saathi' app in new phones. This app will enable users to report suspicious calls, check IMEI numbers, and block stolen phones. The government states that the app is crucial for cyber security and will assist in tracking lost or stolen devices.
The directive issued to smartphone companies mandates that the 'Sanchar Saathi' app be preloaded in all new mobile phones. This instruction has been issued privately, which could increase the chances of a clash with companies like Apple, which generally does not allow government apps to be pre-installed.
India is one of the largest phone markets in the world with over 1.2 billion customers. According to government data, since the app's launch in January, over 700,000 lost phones have been recovered, including 50,000 phones in October alone. This mandate will affect all smartphone companies including Apple, Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi.
According to the order issued on November 28, major smartphone companies must ensure that 'Sanchar Saathi' is preloaded on all new phones within 90 days. Users will not be able to uninstall this app. Phones already in the supply chain will receive the app through software updates.
Sources have reported that Apple pre-installs only its own apps on its phones and does not allow government or third-party apps to be pre-installed. Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi have not yet commented on the directive, and the Telecom Ministry has also not provided any response.
What is an IMEI Number?
Two industry sources stated that no prior consultation was held with the companies before issuing the directive. The government stated that the app is essential to counter serious cyber threats in telecom, such as fake or altered IMEI numbers. The IMEI number is a unique 14-17 digit number used to block stolen phones from accessing the network.
Benefits of "Sanchar Saathi" App
With the 'Sanchar Saathi' app, users can report suspicious calls, check IMEI numbers, and block stolen or lost phones. Since its launch, the app has received over 5 million downloads. Through the app, over 370,000 stolen or lost phones have been blocked, and over 30 million fake connections have been terminated.
The government claims that this app plays a significant role in preventing cyber threats, locating stolen phones, and stopping fake mobile devices from entering the market.
