On April 11, China’s Ministry of Commerce announced that after the US increased tariffs on Chinese goods, China filed a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization (WTO). In response, the new US notification sets a total trade tariff of 145% on China, to which China has now retaliated by imposing a 125% tariff on US imports.
Previously, China had announced a 84% tariff on US products. In response to the US imposing a 145% tariff, China increased the tariff to 125% on April 11. China has also filed a lawsuit with the WTO against the US's tariff increases.
Before the new tariff announcement, China imposed an 84% tariff and even banned the import of some US films. China also expressed interest in discussing the issue with Washington to find a resolution. China is the only country that has retaliated against Trump's tariffs.
On April 11, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for the European Union to join China in opposing the "threat" from the US. In a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Xi stated, "There is no winner in a tariff war," and emphasized that both China and the EU are firm supporters of economic globalization and free trade.
Xi urged both China and the European Union to jointly oppose "unilateral coercion," referring to the global tariffs imposed by the US.
