CBI Director Praveen Sood's Tenure Extended by One Year

A high-level meeting was held at the Prime Minister's residence to discuss the appointment of a new Director for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.

According to sources, the committee failed to reach a consensus on a new name for the position. As a result, it was agreed to extend the tenure of the current CBI Director, Praveen Sood, by one year.

The Central Government is expected to formalize this extension soon. The meeting took place on May 5 under the appointment committee specifically constituted for the selection of the new CBI chief.

Some sources claim that Rahul Gandhi expressed dissent over the extension of Sood's tenure. However, with no unified agreement on a replacement, the decision to extend was reached.

The tenure of a CBI Director can be extended up to a maximum of five years under existing rules.
