At present, the roadmap that has been prepared for the successful implementation of the new Logistics Policy in the country aims to promote water transport as a priority. In particular, a special role of waterways has been ensured in achieving the target of reducing the logistics cost from 13-14 percent to 8-10 percent. Under the new PM Gatishakti Yojana and Logistics Policy, it has been ensured to create a network of 111 waterways on a total of 109 rivers of the country. Under the Sagarmala Project, the Ministry of Shipping has set a target to increase the share of water transport in total domestic freight from the presently mere 6 per cent to 12 per cent by the year 2025 . At present, the Central Government is seen moving forward on the strategy of giving relief to the road and rail transport system which is facing heavy pressure by giving rapid encouragement to inland water freight transport under the new Logistics Policy 2022. Due to this, lakhs of new employment opportunities will also be created in this sector .
