Budget Session of Parliament Begins with President's Address

The first part of the 18th Lok Sabha Budget Session started on 28 January 2026 with a joint meeting of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, marked by the address of President Draupadi Murmu.

In her 45-minute speech, the President stated that the government is committed to economic progress and social justice in the country. She highlighted the government’s success in tackling corruption and scams. The speech also referenced the VB-G Ramji Law, which led to protests by the opposition demanding its withdrawal, while NDA members raised slogans in support. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah were seen applauding.

The budget session will continue from 28 January to 2 April 2026 in two parts: the first part from 28 January to 13 February, and the second part from 9 March to 2 April. A total of 30 sittings are planned. On 28 January and 1 February, there will be no Zero Hour.

Four Key Highlights from the President's Address

  • India as a Global Connector: The President noted that India is playing the role of a bridge in the world.
  • Operation Sindoor: The courage of the Indian Army was displayed globally, successfully destroying terrorist bases. Work on Mission Sudarshan Chakra is ongoing.
  • Learning from Ancestors: Recent celebrations like the 350th Shaheedi Diwas of Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, 150th birthdays of Birsa Munda and Sardar Patel, and Bhupen Hazarika’s birthday inspire the new generation for a developed India.
