दो बार बिहार के मुख्यमंत्री रहे और बिहार में अन्य पिछड़ा वर्ग (ओबीसी) की राजनीति के सूत्रधार माने जाने वाले कर्पूरी ठाकुर का नाम मरणोपरांत देश के सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान ‘भारत रत्न’ के लिए चुना गया है।

राष्ट्रपति भवन ने 23 जनवरी को उनकी जन्म शताब्दी की पूर्वसंध्या पर यह घोषणा की। ‘जननायक’ के रूप में मशहूर ठाकुर पहले गैर-कांग्रेसी नेता थे जो दिसंबर 1970 से जून 1971 तक और दिसंबर 1977 से अप्रैल 1979 तक दो बार बिहार के मुख्यमंत्री रहे। उनका 17 फरवरी, 1988 को निधन हो गया था। ठाकुर से पहले 2019 में राष्ट्रपति प्रणब मुखर्जी को ‘भारत रत्न’ से सम्मानित किया गया था। भारत के पहले राष्ट्रपति डॉ. राजेन्द्र प्रसाद ने आज ही के दिन यानी 2 जनवरी 1954 को 'भारत रत्न' को संस्थापित किया था। देश का सबसे बड़ा नागरिक सम्‍मान 'भारत रत्न' है। यह उन महान शख्सियतों को दिया जाता है, जिन्‍होंने कला, साहित्य, विज्ञान, समाज सेवा और खेल के क्षेत्र में उल्लेखनीय और असाधारण योगदान के जरिए राष्ट्र सेवा की हो। बता दें कि खेल के क्षेत्र में विशिष्ट उपलब्धि हासिल करने वालों को भी भारत रत्न से सम्मानित करने का प्रावधान बाद में किया गया। पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री और दिवंगत राजनेता कर्पूरी ठाकुर के लिए भारत सरकार ने भारत रत्न की घोषणा की है। कर्पूरी ठाकुर को गरीब और वंचितों का मसीहा के रूप में जाना जाता था। उनकी सादगी की चर्चा आज भी होती है।

Karpoori Thakur, who was the Chief Minister of Bihar twice and considered the architect of Other Backward Class (OBC) politics in Bihar, has been posthumously selected for the country's highest civilian award 'Bharat Ratna'. Rashtrapati Bhavan made this announcement on January 23, on the eve of his birth centenary. Thakur, popularly known as 'Jananayak', was the first non-Congress leader to be the Chief Minister of Bihar twice, from December 1970 to June 1971 and from December 1977 to April 1979. He died on February 17, 1988. Before Thakur, President Pranab Mukherjee was awarded the 'Bharat Ratna' in 2019. The first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, instituted 'Bharat Ratna' on this day i.e. 2 January 1954. The country's highest civilian honor is 'Bharat Ratna'. It is given to great personalities who have served the nation through notable and extraordinary contributions in the fields of art, literature, science, social service and sports. Let us tell you that later a provision was made to award Bharat Ratna to those who have achieved special achievements in the field of sports. The Government of India has announced Bharat Ratna for former Chief Minister and late politician Karpoori Thakur. Karpoori Thakur was known as the messiah of the poor and the downtrodden. His simplicity is discussed even today.
