Bangladesh to Hold General Elections in February 2026: Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus
On August 5, Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus addressed the nation and announced that general elections will be held in February 2026, before the beginning of Ramadan. He stated that he would send a formal letter to the Chief Election Commissioner requesting that parliamentary elections be organized ahead of the holy month, which is expected to begin on February 17 or 18 next year.
Earlier, the elections were scheduled to take place in the first half of April 2026. However, due to recent political developments, including a mass uprising in July 2024, the timeline has been revised.
Following the public unrest, the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power. On August 5, 2024, the Hasina administration collapsed, and she reportedly moved to India. An interim government was formed under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus with a promise to restore democratic order in the country.
Over the past several months, political parties and citizens alike have been demanding fresh elections to re-establish a stable and democratic government in Bangladesh.
