Assam Cabinet Approves Anti-Polygamy Bill: Up to 7 Years Imprisonment
The Assam Cabinet has approved a bill to prohibit polygamy, under which offenders may face up to 7 years imprisonment. Named the Assam Anti-Polygamy Bill, 2025, the legislation aims to protect women's dignity and ensure gender justice.
Key Provisions of the Bill
The bill provides strict punishment for anyone marrying more than one woman. Offenders may face imprisonment along with a fine, regardless of their religious background. Tribal areas covered under the Sixth Schedule are exempted from the bill's provisions. A compensation fund will also be established to support women affected by polygamy.
Government Statement
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the bill will be introduced in the Winter Assembly Session on November 25, 2025. He emphasized that the offense will be non-bailable and strict measures will be taken against violators. The government will also provide necessary financial assistance to the victims.
Impact and Response
If passed by the Assam Assembly, the state will become one of the few in India, alongside Uttarakhand, to impose strict anti-polygamy laws. Women’s organizations have welcomed this initiative as a progressive step for gender justice.
