Apple Appoints Amar Subramanya as AI Vice President
Apple has appointed Indian-origin researcher Amar Subramanya as the Vice President of AI. Prior to this, John Giannandrea was in charge of the AI division. However, recent reports suggested that Apple’s CEO Tim Cook had lost confidence in Giannandrea’s ability to deliver product development in the AI space. Since then, speculations have been rife that Apple might appoint a new leader for its AI department. On Monday, Apple announced Subramanya as the new head of AI.
Amar Subramanya was previously associated with Microsoft, where he worked as the Corporate Vice President of AI. Apple has always been known for its innovation. However, in recent years, Apple’s devices have seen few notable changes aside from camera alignment and software upgrades. While other tech companies have been integrating AI into their devices, Apple has been relying on its old Siri assistant. Meanwhile, Apple’s major competitor, Samsung, has been quickly refreshing its AI features. It seems Apple has finally decided to correct this oversight by appointing Subramanya to lead key AI areas like foundation models and ML research, reporting directly to Software Chief Craig Federighi.
Who is Amar Subramanya?
Amar Subramanya is of Indian origin. While detailed information about him is limited, according to his LinkedIn profile, he completed his Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics, and Communication Engineering from Bangalore University. He later pursued a PhD from Washington University between 2005 and 2009.
Amar was part of Google’s DeepMind team, known for its advanced AI work, and spent 16 years at Google. He led engineering efforts for the Gemini Assistant. After his tenure at Google, he moved to Microsoft, and now he is set to join Apple to lead AI development.
