Alcaraz Wins Italian Open, Reaches World No. 2

On May 18, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 in the final of the Italian Open, securing the title. This is his third title of the season. With this win, Alcaraz will move to second place in the world rankings, right after Sinner. Following his victory in Monte Carlo, this is Alcaraz’s second Masters 1000 title of the year.

Sinner’s 26-match winning streak was broken in this final. Alcaraz had previously defeated Sinner in the China Open final, and since the beginning of 2024, Alcaraz is the only player to have defeated Sinner in the Tour Finals.

Jasmine Paolini Makes History

Jasmine Paolini made history by becoming the first player since Monica Seles to win both the singles and doubles titles at the Italian Open. Paolini teamed up with Sara Errani to win the doubles title and then defeated Coco Gauff in singles to become the first Italian woman to win the singles title in Rome since 1985.
