AIBE Time Limit Extended to 3 Years for New Lawyers Enrolled After 2022

New Advocates Will Now Have 3 Years to Pass the All India Bar Exam

On April 30, a significant relief was announced for new advocates. The Bar Council of India (BCI) has extended the period to pass the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) from two years to three years. This change was made in response to requests from various State Bar Councils.

According to R.K. Singh Saini, Vice Chairman of the State Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh, this relaxation applies only to those lawyers who enrolled with a State Bar Council in the year 2022 or later. Previously, candidates had only two years to pass the AIBE. Now, the provisional enrollment period has been extended by one year, making it a total of three years.

State Bar Council Chairman Radhelal Gupta stated that this change has been made by amending the previous BCI notification dated April 12, 2013. However, this extension will be considered the final opportunity. If a lawyer fails to pass the AIBE within the three-year period, their name will be removed from the State Bar’s roll. Their status as an advocate will be revoked.

Once delisted, such individuals will no longer be allowed to appear in court, wear the lawyer’s uniform, or participate in Bar Council elections by casting their vote.
