Abhishek Sharma and Smriti Mandhana Named Players of the Month
India’s star opener Abhishek Sharma and Smriti Mandhana have been named ICC’s Players of the Month for September, following their outstanding performances in the Asia Cup and the Women's ODI series against Australia respectively.
Abhishek scored 314 runs in seven matches at an average of 44.85 and an impressive strike rate of 200. The 25-year-old, who was also named the Player of the Tournament in the Asia Cup, achieved his highest-ever T20 international batting ranking points. He surpassed his teammates Kuldeep Yadav and Zimbabwe’s Brian Bennett to earn the honor of the month’s best cricketer. Abhishek said, “Winning this ICC award feels great and I’m happy it came after some important matches where I could contribute to victories. I’m proud to be part of a team that can win under the toughest conditions. Our recent T20 international record reflects our excellent team culture and positive mindset.”
Meanwhile, Mandhana delivered a superb performance in the domestic ODI series against Australia, scoring 58, 117, and 125 runs in three matches. The Indian women’s team vice-captain accumulated 308 runs at an average of 77 and a strike rate of 135.68 over four ODIs. Preparing for India’s campaign in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, Mandhana scored the fastest century by any Indian batter in the series, completing her hundred off just 50 balls in the third match. South Africa’s Tazmin Brits and Pakistan’s Sidra Ameen were also contenders for the award. Mandhana said, “Such recognition motivates you as a player to improve and perform better. My goal has always been to deliver my best and win matches for the team.”
