9-Carat Gold Jewelry Now Requires Mandatory Hallmarking
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made hallmarking mandatory for jewelry made from 9-carat gold (375 ppt), effective from July 18, 2025. Until now, hallmarking was only required for jewelry made from 24K, 23K, 22K, 20K, 18K, and 14K gold.
Hallmarking serves as a certification of the purity and authenticity of gold. With this new mandate, all jewelers and hallmarking centers across India must comply with the updated BIS standards.
What’s New in BIS Guidelines?
- 9K gold jewelry (375 parts per thousand) is now covered under mandatory hallmarking.
- Gold watches and pens are exempted from hallmarking.
- The move aims to provide more transparency and assurance to consumers about gold purity.
The All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council has stated that all stakeholders must now follow these updated BIS regulations. This ensures better consumer protection and standardization in the gold jewelry market.
