The power changed in Britain on 5 July. The ruling Conservative Party lost the election to the Labour Party after 14 years. A few hours later, Indian-origin Rishi Sunak resigned from the post of Prime Minister. 61-year-old Keir Starmer of the Labour Party has become the 58th Prime Minister of the country.
Sunak has accepted defeat and apologized to the party. He also called Starmer and congratulated him on the victory. The Labour Party has got a bumper victory in the general election. The party has won 412 out of a total of 650 seats.
326 seats are required to form a government. On the other hand, the Conservatives were reduced to 120 seats. This is the biggest defeat of the Conservative Party in the last 200 years.
Keir Starmer has formed his cabinet. Taking a historic step, he has appointed Rachel Reeves as the Finance Minister. She is the first woman to achieve this post. Reeves is 45 years old. She started her career in the banking sector. Apart from this, Angela Rayner has got the post of Deputy Prime Minister. Rayner has also got the charge of Minister of Equality, Housing and Communities.
