The Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister has approved a one-year extension for Dr. Sameer V. Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence, Research and Development and Chairman, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Dr. Sameer Kamat was due to retire on 31 May 2024 but now his tenure has been extended till 31 May 2025.
Perhaps the main reason for extending Dr. Kamat's contract is to ensure the continuity of the reform process being implemented in DRDO.
The Government of India had constituted a nine-member panel headed by former Principal Scientific Advisor Prof. K. Vijay Raghavan to reform the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The panel has submitted its report to the Prime Minister's Office in which it has suggested a wide range of reforms to make DRDO an efficient and agile organisation, avoid delays in DRDO projects, evaluate projects and scientists and maximize industry and academia participation in defence technologies.
The Indian government has set a deadline of 31 August 2024 for implementing the Raghavan panel report.
For this purpose, the Indian government has set up an oversight committee, headed by Dr. Kamat and comprising two other senior Directors General of DRDO.
Dr. Samir Kamat is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and Ohio State University, USA. In 1989, he joined DRDO, and on 25 August 2022, he was appointed as the Chairman of DRDO. Whoever is the Chairman of DRDO is automatically also the Secretary, Department of Defence, Research and Development.\
He is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from IIT Kharagpur, Metallurgist of the Year Award from the Ministry of Steel and Scientist of the Year Award from DRDO.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation was established by the Government of India in 1958 under the Union Ministry of Defence. DRDO is India's premier defence research and development body that develops cutting-edge defence technology for the Indian Armed Forces.
