The 47th ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Summit and its related meetings began today in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This year's summit theme is “Inclusivity and Sustainability.” Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia and ASEAN 2025 Chair, said at the opening ceremony that growing competition and uncertainty are testing not only ASEAN economies but also the collective commitment of ASEAN to maintain trust in cooperation. He added that ASEAN's strength lies in the belief that respect and reason still bind members together. Following his speech, a declaration was signed for Timor-Leste's entry into ASEAN.

With this, Timor-Leste became the 11th member of ASEAN. During the three-day summit, ASEAN leaders will discuss strengthening regional integration, promoting economic growth, and enhancing ASEAN connectivity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated virtually in this meeting. PM Modi stated that the 21st century belongs to India and ASEAN. Addressing the ASEAN-India Summit virtually from Malaysia, he said that India and ASEAN together represent nearly a quarter of the world's population. He emphasized that India and ASEAN are not only geographically connected but also share strong historical ties and common values.

PM Modi added that despite uncertainties, the India-ASEAN comprehensive strategic partnership has consistently progressed. He stated that this strong partnership has emerged as a robust foundation for global stability and development. India has stood firmly with its ASEAN friends during every crisis. Cooperation is rapidly increasing in maritime disaster management, security, and the blue economy. He also declared 2026 as the “ASEAN-India Maritime Cooperation Year.” Alongside the ASEAN Summit, the East Asia Summit will also take place. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar will represent PM Modi at the summit.
