The results of the assembly elections in Sikkim were declared on 2 June. Prem Singh Tamang-led Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) created history by winning 31 out of 32 assembly seats. With this big victory, the party gained power. Sikkim Chief Minister and SKM President Prem Singh Tamang has won two seats - Rhenock and Soreng-Chakung - by a huge margin.
56-year-old Prem Singh Tamang is considered a skilled organizer, administrator and flamboyant politician. He was born on February 5, 1968 to Kalu Singh Tamang and Dhan Maya Tamang. After completing his graduation from a college in Darjeeling, West Bengal, he became a teacher in a government school in 1990. Three years later, Tamang left his job. In 1994, he co-founded the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF).
Tamang was associated with the SDF for nearly 20 years but then due to differences with the party, he went solo in politics. In these two decades, Tamang held the post of minister for 15 years. Then in 2013, he formed his own party - Sikkim Krantikari Morcha.
The party contested its first assembly election in 2014 and it started off well. SKM won 10 seats. But like almost all politicians, Tamang's attire is also tainted by corruption. During these years, Tamang was convicted in a corruption case. He had to serve a one-year jail sentence. After being convicted, he was disqualified as MLA from Upper Burtuk seat from the Sikkim Assembly. Tamang was released from jail in 2017 and then continued his rise in politics.
