The 77th World Health Assembly (World Health Assembly-WHA) has amended the International Health Rules, 2005 and has geared up to protect 194 member countries from any global pandemic like COVID-19 in the future. Its blueprint has been prepared by unanimously approving 300 proposals of member countries.
India has played an important role in the amendment of IHR-2005 and has worked to get the member countries to agree on the revised rules. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare says that there was a deadlock between many countries in this regard. But India has played an important role in preparing this draft and has paved the way for participation in its operation, determining the equitable accountability of developing countries in public health emergencies.
The amendment to the International Health Rules, 2005 (IHR-2005) was finalized on 28 May. It was approved on 1 June. Union Health Secretary Apoorva Chandra led the Indian delegation at the meeting in Geneva. He forwarded the proposals in the form of a white paper so that a 'single drafting group' could be formed. In this 'treaty' prepared for the global pandemic, the Health Ministry worked to get it approved by all by establishing consensus among all the member countries.

This is a remarkable achievement for everyone. This is a gift for our children and their children. This amendment is the next step in cooperation in dealing with epidemics and an umbrella of solidarity has been created to keep the whole world safe from the threats of future global epidemics.'
These amendments include Response to Public Health Emergencies of International Concern (PHEIC) and Preparation for Global Emergencies (PE). Financial resources are needed to assist PHEICs and PEs in developing countries to advance, strengthen and sustain core capacities under IHR-2005.
