थल सेना के उपप्रमुख के रूप में कार्यभार संभालने से पहले, लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल उपेन्द्र द्विवेदी बेहद चुनौतीपूर्ण परिचालन माहौल में 2022-2024 तक उत्तरी कमान के जनरल ऑफिसर कमांडिंग-इन-चीफ के पद पर कार्यरत थे।
सैनिक स्कूल, रीवा (मध्य प्रदेश) के पूर्व छात्र, लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल उपेन्द्र द्विवेदी को 1984 में 18 जम्मू और कश्मीर राइफल्स में नियुक्त किया गया था, इस इकाई की उन्होंने बाद में कमान संभाली। उनको उत्तरी और पश्चिमी दोनों थिएटरों के संतुलित इक्सपोशर का अनूठा गौरव प्राप्त है।

An alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa (Madhya Pradesh), Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi was commissioned into 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in 1984, a unit he later commanded. He has the unique distinction of having balanced exposure to both Northern and Western theatre.
During his illustrious career spanning 39 years, he has held command positions in challenging operational environments spread across the country. Have worked on appointments. He commanded his unit in the Kashmir Valley as well as in Rajasthan. He has been Sector Commander and Inspector General of Assam Rifles in an intense counter-terrorism environment in the North East.
