The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas conference will be held from January 8 to 10 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the event on January 9, and it will conclude on January 10 with President Draupadi Murmu’s presence. The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman awards ceremony will also take place on this day. The President of Trinidad and Tobago, Christine Carla Kangalu, will be the chief guest for the conference. The conference will begin with the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas on January 8.
Highlights of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
For the first time, the Odisha government has taken responsibility for organizing the event, inviting 3,500 expatriates from 50 countries. The three-day conference will have an estimated attendance of around 7,500 people. According to officials from the Odisha government’s Home Department, the daily registration numbers have exceeded 150 in recent days, compared to 40-50 registrations a week ago.
History of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas conference was initiated by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2003. It has been held in cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Chennai, Varanasi, Bengaluru, and Indore. The event was held virtually in 2021 due to the COVID pandemic.
Hosting in Bhubaneswar and the Events
Bhubaneswar is hosting the event for the first time, with major events such as the night flea market, tribal fair, food festival, Rajrani music festival, Muktashwar dance festival, and Ekamra festival. A budget of ₹125 crores has been allocated for the event. Five double-decker buses and ten premium buses from Mumbai will be arranged for the guests. These buses will take the visitors on a tour of Odisha's key tourist destinations, including the Kalinga battle site, Puri Jagannath Temple, Blue Flag beaches, and the famous Sun Temple at Konark, among 31 major locations.
