The 10th edition of the India-Sri Lanka joint military exercise Mitra Shakti began at the Army Training School in Maduru Oya, Sri Lanka. The exercise is being conducted from 12 to 25 August 2024. The Indian contingent consists of 106 personnel and is represented by a battalion of Rajputana Rifles and other army personnel. At the same time, the Sri Lankan contingent is represented by personnel from the Gajaba Regiment of the Sri Lankan Army. Joint Exercise Mitra Shakti is an annual training event, which is held alternately in India and Sri Lanka. Its last edition was held in Pune in November 2023.
The aim of the joint exercise is to enhance the joint military capability of both sides to conduct counter-terrorism operations in sub-conventional scenario under Chapter VII of the United Nations Mandate. This exercise will focus specifically on military operations in semi-urban environment.
The tactical activities to be conducted during the exercise include counter terrorist operations, establishment of a joint command post, establishment of an intelligence and surveillance centre, security of a helipad/landing site, insertion and evacuation of small contingents, special heliborne operations, cordon and search operations besides use of drones and counter drone systems.
Exercise Mitra Shakti will enable both sides to share best practices in tactics, techniques and procedures for conducting joint operations. It will help in developing inter-operational activities, camaraderie and peace cooperation between the two armies. The joint exercise will also enhance defence cooperation, thereby further boosting bilateral relations between the two friendly countries.
