Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu made this statement after China approved the construction of the world's largest dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet, with an estimated cost of $137 billion. The dam will be built in a vast valley in the Himalayan region near the Indian border.

       

Chief Minister Pema Khandu mentioned that the Siyang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) will not only generate electricity but also reduce the risk of floods due to the sudden release of additional water from China. The estimated cost of the project is ₹1.13 lakh crore, and the central government is planning its development.

       

Khandu’s statement follows China's approval to build the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet. This dam will be built in a vast Himalayan valley near the Indian border, where the Brahmaputra River takes a major U-turn to flow through Arunachal Pradesh and then Bangladesh. Khandu stated that the SUMP will generate 11,000 MW of electricity. The real aim of the project is to protect the Siyang River and the communities that have relied on it for generations.

       

According to Khandu, the proposed Siyang project will feature a dam capable of storing 9 billion cubic meters of water, ensuring continuous flow even during dry seasons. This dam will serve as a buffer against the sudden release of water from upper Chinese dams, preventing potentially disastrous floods in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Bangladesh.
