The organizers of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games have introduced a historic change to the competition schedule. For the first time ever, the women’s 100m final will take place on the opening day, making it the headline event of Day 1.
According to the organizers, the change has been made due to logistical and stadium-related requirements. The opening ceremony and swimming events will be held at SoFi Stadium, while athletics competitions will be conducted at the LA Memorial Coliseum.
By scheduling athletics in the first week, SoFi Stadium can be prepared for aquatics events in the second week. LA28 Chief Sports Officer Shana Ferguson said, “We want to begin the Games with a spectacular start. The women’s 100m race is among the most popular Olympic events.”
Chief Athlete Officer Janet Evans said that holding swimming events in the second week will allow swimmers to take part in the opening ceremony—an opportunity they usually miss because of early competitions.
The first day will also feature the women's triathlon medals. Organizers expect it to be the first day in Olympic history with the highest number of women's finals.
On the 15th day, known as Super Saturday, 26 medal events across 23 sports will take place. Organizers anticipate that women athletes will exceed 50% participation.
