गोपी थोटाकुरा भारत के पहले अंतरिक्ष पर्यटक बन गए हैं। उद्यमी और पायलट गोपी ने 19 मई को ब्लू ओरिजिन के प्राइवेट अंतरिक्षयान से उड़ान भरी। ब्लू ओरिजिन अमेजन के संस्थापक जेफ बेजोस की कंपनी है। गोपी को पांच अन्य सहयात्रियों के साथ न्यू शेपर्ड-25 मिशन के लिए चुना गया था। अंतरिक्ष की उड़ान भरने के साथ ही वह पहले भारतीय अंतरिक्ष पर्यटक और अंतरिक्ष में जाने वाले दूसरे भारतीय बने।
भारतीयसेना के विंग कमांडर राकेश शर्मा 1984में अंतरिक्ष में गए थे। राकेश शर्मा अंतरिक्ष में जाने वाले पहले भारतीय हैं। ब्लू ओरिजिन की सातवीं मानव उड़ान, एनएस-25 वेस्ट टेक्सास से रवाना हुई। गोपी के साथ चालक दल के अन्य पांच सदस्यों में मेसन एंजेल, सिल्वेन शिरोन, केनेथ एल. हेस, कैरोल स्कालर और अमेरिका वायुसेना के पूर्व कैप्टन एड ड्वाइट शामिल थे। मिशन के दौरान चालक दल ने ध्वनि की गति से तीन गुना से भी अधिक गति से यात्रा की।
रॉकेट ने कैप्सूल को कार्मन लाइन से आगे बढ़ाया, जो पृथ्वी की सतह से 100 किलोमीटर ऊपर का क्षेत्र है। इस क्षेत्र के बाद बाहरी अंतरिक्ष शुरू होता है। अंतरिक्ष पर्यटक लगभग 10 मिनट तक अंतरिक्ष में रहे। उड़ान के दौरान यात्रियों को कुछ मिनटों के लिए भारहीनता और केबिन की खिड़कियों से पृथ्वी के अद्भुत दृश्यों का अनुभव हुआ। इसके बाद अंतरिक्षयान की धरती पर सुरक्षित वापसी हुई।
Gopi Thotakura has become India's first space tourist. Entrepreneur and pilot Gopi took off in Blue Origin's private spacecraft on May 19. Blue Origin is the company of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Gopi was selected for the New Shepard-25 mission along with five other co-travellers. With his space flight, he became the first Indian space tourist and the second Indian to go to space. Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma of the Indian Army went to space in 1984. Rakesh Sharma is the first Indian to go to space. Blue Origin's seventh manned flight, NS-25, took off from West Texas. Along with Gopi, the other five members of the crew include Mason Engel, Sylvain Chiron, Kenneth L. Hayes, Carroll Schaller and former US Air Force Captain Ed Dwight. During the mission the crew traveled at more than three times the speed of sound. The rocket launched the capsule past the Kármán Line, a region 100 kilometers above the Earth's surface. After this area outer space begins. The space tourists remained in space for about 10 minutes. During the flight passengers experienced a few minutes of weightlessness and amazing views of the Earth from the cabin windows. After this the spacecraft returned safely to Earth.
