India's AI Model: India to have its own AI Model within 1 Year

Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that India will have its own Artificial Intelligence (AI) foundational model in the next 8-10 months. This AI model is being developed with a focus on India's security, language, and culture, and it will be available to the world.

India's AI Model

The Indian AI model will be superior to China's Deepseek AI model, as Deepseek was developed using 2,000 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), while India's AI model is being developed with over 15,000 GPUs. The US's ChatGPT was developed using 25,000 GPUs. Six companies are currently involved in developing India's own AI model with government support.

Common Computing Facility

The government has also sought proposals from other startups and organizations for developing India's AI model. A crucial requirement for AI model development is computing power, and the government is providing a common computing facility that will be accessible to all. Any organization or startup can use this computing facility for a nominal fee.

Framework Ready

The government will also provide a 40% subsidy on the fee for using the facility. Under the India AI mission, 10,000 GPUs have already been made available, and in the coming months, the number will increase to 18,693 GPUs. The framework for the common computing facility has been prepared, and it will soon be accessible to everyone.

AI Model Development

Vaishnaw stated that India is not behind in developing the AI model; in fact, we are on track. Computing resources are a serious matter, and the India AI mission, which was approved last March, is based on seven pillars, with an allocation of ₹10,371 crore. Common computing facility, AI model, AI applications, and AI security are key pillars. Following the unveiling of China’s Deepseek AI model three days ago, there were concerns about India lagging in AI development.
